MADHUBANI

Madhubani painting started as wall and floor art in the villages around Bihar's Mithila region, made by women using twigs, brushes, and even fingers, with natural pigments and dyes. Only in the last several decades did the same bold, symbolic imagery — fish, peacocks, the sun, geometric borders — move onto paper and textile.

Because it's a painting tradition rather than a weaving or embroidery one, every piece carries slight variation the way a hand-drawn line always does.

This edit is our earliest and smallest — we're building it carefully around printmakers who trained directly under Mithila artists rather than generic folk-print reproductions.
